ServiceNow Data Migration Project

Project summary: Boston University recently completed a migration from their legacy ServiceNow instance to a new greenfield instance using Precision Bridge for data migration. The purpose of the project was to refactor our aging ServiceNow implementation to eliminate customizations and adopt new out of box functionality. From the outset, it was decided that active application data needed to be included in the migration particularly as they wanted to be able to continue working tickets on the new instance without interruption.

The project involved the migration of data from Incident, Problem, Change, CMDB, Incident, CSM, Knowledge, Releases, SDLC and Project applications. In total over 10 million records were migrated across all applications. Precision Bridge was also used to migrate attachments, record relationships, activity logs, some audit history and activity as well as creating an SLA marker for each Incident all while maintaining data integrity. Boston took the approach of migrating all active transaction records as well as all new records created since Jan 1st 2023 since it was important to support annual reporting requirements.

With the help of a consultant, we were able to configure a set of Precision Bridge migration projects that were designed to support the incremental migration of batches of records. Test conversions were started early in the project and provided data for validation and user acceptance testing in a sub-production environment. Following the initial batch run in each case, subsequent delta migrations were configured to allow new or updated records to be included prior to the cutover date.

Overall the project was a success and following go-live there were only a few minor issues with the data migration that needed to be addressed. Precision Bridge allowed us to re-run data migrations and resolve data issues quickly.
